This is a subtemple of Kodaiji Temple, a branch of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, founded in 1616 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's in-laws, Kyurin.

“Kodaiji Gesshin-in” faces the atmospheric stone-paved road, Nene-no-michi. A tourist spot, yet a place to enjoy a moment of tranquility

 

Gesshin-in was built in 1616 by Kyurin Gensho under the patronage of Kamei Buzen-no-kami as a sub-temple of Kodai-ji Temple.

It is also famous as the place where Ito Koshitaro, who separated from the Shinsengumi at the end of the Edo period, organized the Goryo Eji and set up his barracks.

It is a historic place in Higashiyama where you can experience the Japanese culture and history of Kyoto.

In the main hall, which is usually closed to the public, you can enjoy Zazen experience under the guidance of the chief priest. In the main hall, surrounded by silence, you can calm your mind while feeling the four seasons of Kyoto visible outside.

 

 

 

Garden

 

In the garden of Gesshin-in, you can still see the “Yuraku Tsubaki(camellia)” that was once a part of the residence of Yurakusai, the younger brother of Oda Nobunaga and a well-known tea master. Beyond the garden, you can also see Hokan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda), giving you a taste of Kyoto. It is also possible to hold an aperitif party here.
